The former parish church of Woodlands was originally built in the 12th century within a Neolithic henge monument. The tower, porch and north chapel were added in the 15th century. Built mainly of flint, there are large blocks of Heathstone supporting the tower. Some Upper Greensand blocks are included in the walls. Whatever the reason for building a church within a Neolithic henge, the curious pairing has undoubtedly contributed to the survival of both, as an enduring symbol of the transition from pagan to Christian worship.
