St. Mary’s Parish Church at Catherston Leweston,Grade 2* (Lead author: PS)

The foundation stone was laid for this small, chapel style, parish church in 1857, commissioned by the Lord of the Manor, R. L. Hildyard. It replaced an older church which fell down.
Beautifully carved Bath stone on the west doorway.
The pulpit is of finely carved Beer stone.

The all the interior walls and chancel arch are clad in Bath stone which unusually has never been whitewashed so retain their natural stone colour.
The reredos of finely carved Bath stone and small columns of a polished limestone ‘marble’ similar to the many Devon marbles which has not been identified. (also see photo right.
