The two cemetery chapels
Blandford Cemetery Chapels
The cemetery chapels are on the Salisbury Road on the east of Blandford, but actually in Pimperne parish. These buildings are faced with Upper Jurassic shelly limestone - probably from quarries just across the River Stour south of Sturminster Newton, some 7 miles northwest of Blandford. The stone is from the Clavellata Formation of the Corallian Group, deposited some 160 million years ago. The Clavellata Formation is named after the common fossil bivalve Myophorella clavellata. The dressings (quoins, windows & door frames) are Middle Jurassic Bath Stone (limestone) from the Bath region, some 10 million years older. Text: JT
